Faithful Shepherd

Sermon Notes:

1. The LORD Our Shepherd.

a) Provision, renewal, and guidance are benefits of following the shepherd.

b) God does all of this for us, not because of what we do, but because of who He is!

c) God will not always remove us from trials, but He promises to  be with us through them!

2. The LORD Our Host.

a) As host, God provides us with fellowship and fullness no matter the circumstances.

b) Those who dwell with the Lord, will know His blessings and enjoy His peace forever!

Questions for further thought or discussion:

  1. What does a good shepherd do for his sheep?  In what ways does God do each of those things for His people?
  2. How does God provide comfort in the midst of hardship and trials?  Why doesn’t He just remove the trial?
  3. What does a good host do for his guests?  What are the benefits of dwelling with the LORD?
  4. Are these benefits and promises threatened by our enemies?  Why not?
  5. How will you look differently at enemies and trials in view of this psalm?

Personal Commitment

Lord, thank you for being my shepherd.  Free me from all fear as I find provision and peace in Your presence.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
